Taiwanese Comic Arts from the Postwar Period to the Present
4 May – 24 May 2015 Dr. Jessie Kuo will deliver three masterclasses to introduce the development and influence of Taiwanese comic arts, including Japanese-style manga, comic-illustrations in newspapers, picture books and graphic novels.
As the recent tragedy of Charlie Hebdo indicates, the caricature has proven to be a powerful medium for social and political expression. Likewise, comic artwork in Taiwan also reflects the complexity of this multicultural island: on the one hand it absorbs both aesthetic and political influences from its neighbours, especially Japan and China; on the other hand it eagerly seeks inspiration from and recognition by European and American culture. Conducted over a period of three weeks, this workshop will explore a variety of issues related to the development of Taiwanese comic arts. Focusing on major publications in Taiwan chronologically, the workshop will discuss upon topics such as frames and framing, voyage and multiculturalism, satire and implied political backgrounds, the social impact of the reading public, and so on. Examples for discussion would range from early Taiwanese newspaper illustrations to the latest western-style graphic novels, including the works of renowned artists Liu Hsing-chin, Zhu De-yong, Jimmy, and Lin Li-chin.
